A scramble for the last spot

With 19 spots of the 20 available post positions secured for the 2024 Kentucky Derby, it will be a scramble for the last open spot. The math, however, is simple. The Lexington offers 20-10-6-4-2 qualifying points for the Derby to the top five finishers. If Hades wins the Lexington Stakes on 4/13, the spot is all his. If not, No More Time steps in to fill the void.

Hades

Up until the Florida Derby (G1), Hades had trounced all opponents. He took first in Gulfstream on 12/9/23, then won an Allowance at the same track, then blew away competitors at the Holy Bull (G3). Then, a disappointing 5th place off a stunning loss of speed caused some awkward glances. Hades was allowed to fade through the entire race.

Hades has 30 points going into the Lexington. A 20-point win would put him at 50 - just enough to grab that last open spot.

No More Time

No More Time broke his maiden in his second attempt at Gulfstream. He then fell to 5th in the Much Macho Man before regaining his footing to take 1st at the Sam F. Davis (G3) and 2nd at the Tamp Bay Derby (G3). His speed, however, has declined with each subsequent race.

Who deserves it more?

We think Hades would perform much better at the Kentucky Derby. However, he hasn't put in the performances to truly deserve it. We hope it makes it in, but we can't complain much if No More Time gets a break.
