Colonial Downs Sets Make-Up Race Date for Sept. 4.

Colonial Downs will have an extra day of live racing on Wednesday, Sept. 4, to make up for the nine-race card lost on Friday, July 12. The first race starts at 1:30 p.m. ET.

Racing was canceled on July 12 due to severe weather and heavy rain in the New Kent area.

Live racing on Wednesday, Sept. 4, will start a four-day race week to close the 2024 meet. This week ends with New Kent County Virginia Derby Day on Saturday, Sept. 7. The main event is the Grade 3 $500,000 New Kent County Virginia Derby, featuring a card with $1.3 million in stakes purses, including five other turf stakes.

Nominations for Colonial Downs Festival of Racing Due July 24

The 2024 Colonial Downs Festival of Racing is right around the corner on Saturday, August 10. Free Nominations close on Wednesday, July 24. The 2024 Festival of Racing includes seven stakes’ races:

  • $1 million The Arlington Million (G1)
    • 3yo and Up at 1¼ miles on the Turf
  • $500,000 The Beverly D. (G2) “Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In”
    • Fillies & Mares, 3yo & Up at 1-3/16 miles on the Turf
  • $500,000 The Secretariat (G2)
    • 3-year-olds at 1 Mile on the Turf
  • $150,000 The Andy Guest Stakes
    • Fillies & Mares, 3yo & Up at 5½ Furlongs on the Turf
  • $150,000 The Van Clief Stakes
    • 3yo and Up at 5½ Furlongs on the Turf
  • $100,000 The Penny Chenery
    • 3-year-old fillies at 7 Furlongs on the Dirt
  • $100,000 The Petramalo Mile
    • 3-year-olds at 1 Mile on the Dirt

Leading Jockeys and Trainers at Colonial Downs

After two weeks of racing at Colonial Downs, jockey Trevor McCarthy leads with five wins. The 2019 and 2020 title winner recorded all five wins over three race days for different barns. Mychel Sanchez, Horacio Karamanos, Jevian Toledo, and Forest Boyce are tied for second with four wins each.

Victor Carrasco has three wins this meet, two of which are stakes wins. On Saturday, Carrasco won the Punch Line Stakes aboard Determined Kingdom for trainer Phil Schoenthal. Last week, he won the Boston Stakes with Fulmineo for Arnaud Delacour.

Horacio Karamanos, with four wins this meet, now totals 552 local wins, making him the all-time leading jockey at Colonial Downs.

Trainers Mike Trombetta, Brittany Russell, and Carlos Munoz are tied at the top with four wins each.
