We have really sad news as we approach the spring racing carnival. Riff Rocket, a three-time Group 1 winner, had to be euthanized. The horse had emergency surgery last week due to a colic attack, but unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse. The four-year-old experienced abdominal pains, and although everything seemed hopeful, unexpected complications arose, leading to this tragic outcome.

"It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Riff Rocket following complications arising from his colic surgery," Waller said in a statement on Tuesday.

"This is an incredibly difficult time for everyone involved, as we mourn the loss of not just a magnificent racehorse but also an extraordinary animal who made an indelible impact on Australian racing."

Weller praised the horse and offered condolences to the owners, the Kepitis family, who also owned the champion racehorse Winx. Riff Rocket won seven of his 12 starts, earning over $3.5 million in prize money.

"Riff Rocket's career as a three-year-old was nothing short of remarkable," Waller said. "This is a heartbreaking loss not only for the Kepitis family, but also for the entire team at Chris Waller Racing. Our thoughts go out to all those who had the privilege of working with and supporting Riff Rocket throughout his career. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to inspire us all."

Riff Rocket had an incredible time on the big stage, earning over $3.5 million in prize money. In 2023, he won the Victoria Derby and received a $600,000 check. He was expected to participate in the upcoming spring racing carnival in Melbourne, with high hopes that he would once again deliver a stellar performance on the biggest stage.
